Via North Andover En Windham naar de staat Maine, Maine is een zeer groene staat niet allen door de natuur maar ze heffen hier ook statie geld op petflessen. Er is alleen een probleem je kunt ze nergens inleveren. Dus gaan ze gewoon mee de vuilnis bak in. Net als de plastic bakjes bij de frituur in Nederland zo als ik mee gekregen heb, in Maine heb wel het mooiste overnachting plekje gehad van de oostkust. Een parkeer plaats midden in een dorp naast een waterval. Heerlijk slapen bij dat kabbelende water. En weer verder naar Calais aan de Canadese grens. Hier brak een ander kabel van mijn uitschuif keuken hij werkte gelukkig nog wel, maar er moet wel een nieuwe in. In heb gelukkig een reserve. De dichts bij zijnde dealer was al dicht (tussen Canada en de USA 1 uur tijd verschil) maar nam de telefoon gelukkig wel op. Hij zou maandag navragen of er tijd voor was. Ik gaf hem aan dat ik in ieder geval zijn kant op zou rijden. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Ik was maandag ochtend bij de dealer en vroeg of ze tijd hadden. En jawel die middag kon het en ze hadden een kabel (dus ik hoede de mijne niet te gebruiken en heb dus nog een reserve). De volgende dag naar Nova Scotia gereden.

Here another cable broke from my pull-out kitchen, luckily it still worked, but I need a new one. Luckily I have a spare. The nearest dealer was already closed (1 hour time difference between Canada and the USA) but luckily they answered the phone. He would inquire on Monday whether there was time. I indicated to him that I would at least drive his way. No sooner said than done. I was at the dealer Monday morning and asked if they had time. And yes, that afternoon it was possible and they had a cable (so I was careful not to use mine and so I still have a spare). Drove to Nova Scotia the next day.

2 tot 12 augustus 2023 - August 2 till 12, 2023

De volgende dag 's middags dus weer op pad richting de kust. Via de Ocean City weer naar het noorden gereden. Het waren hier allemaal toeristische kustplaatsen met net als in Daytona Beach, veel avontuur golf banen, karting en veel kermisattracties.

Langzaam steeds verder naar het noorden onder langs Philadelphia richting Cape May en langs de kust omhoog naar Atlantic City. Dit is het Vegas voor de New Yorkers. Veel van de zelfde casino's als er in Vegas staan.

En weer door richting New York. Tot New York ging voorspoedig. Maar door New York was geen pretje, te lage viaducten dus om rijden, veel files en tol bruggen. Om New York te passeren kost mij een hele dag van 's morgens 09:00 tot 's avonds 22:00 over een traject va ongeveer 400km. Daarna richting Boston wederom langs de kustlijn. Normaal rijd ik niet over de snelweg maar ik moest wel, door dat hier in de kleine plaatsjes de spoorviaducten te laag waren en vaak te laat aangegeven. Niet bij de kruising voor het viaduct maar pas bij het viaduct ik heb een keer 500 meter achter uit moeten rijden (dat is geen probleem) maar die Amerikanen blijven achter je staan en manen dat je door moet rijden. En als je dan uit legt dat je er niet onderdoor kan gaan ze aan de kant en dan achter uit de kruising over, om daarna af te slaan en terug te rijden. Dus dan maar via de snelweg. Buiten de steden gaat het wel. Een maal in de buurt van boston een overnachting plek bij een Cracker Barrel restaurant gevonden. De volgende dag ik Boston in kijken wat er in de stad te zien was. Nou dat was een belevenis het was een grote bouwput en absoluut geen parkeer plaatsen alleen parkeer garages met een max hoogte van 1.6 meter maar mijn truck is 1,75, dat past niet. Dus maar weer terug naar mijn camper. 

The next day in the afternoon we set off again towards the coast. Drove north again via Ocean City. These were all tourist coastal towns with, just like in Daytona Beach, many adventure golf courses, go-karting, and many fairground attractions.

Slowly further north past Philadelphia towards Cape May and up along the coast to Atlantic City. This is Vegas for New Yorkers. Many of the same casinos as there are in Vegas.

And back to New York. Things were going well until New York. But driving through New York was no fun, with viaducts that were too low, lots of traffic jams, and toll bridges. To pass through New York takes me a whole day from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the evening over a route of about 400 km. Then towards Boston again along the coastline. Normally I don't drive on the highway, but I had to because the railway viaducts in the small towns here were too low and often indicated too late. Not at the intersection before the viaduct but only at the viaduct. I once had to drive backward for 500 meters (that's no problem) but those Americans stayed behind me and told me to keep driving. And when you explain that you can't go under it, they pull over and then go back through the intersection, then turn off and drive back. So just take the highway. Things are fine outside the cities. Once found a place to stay overnight at a Cracker Barrel restaurant near Boston. The next day I went into Boston to see what there was to see in the city. Well that was an experience, it was a large construction site and absolutely no parking spaces, only parking garages with a maximum height of 1.6 meters, but my truck is 1.75, and that doesn't fit. So back to my camper.

Hallo ik ben er weer, even de tijd genomen om een stukje te schrijven.

Ik ben van Kitty Hawk richting het noorden gereden langs de oost kust. Op een dag zag ik dat er een kabel van mijn uitschuif keuken bijna was door gesleten. Ik heb direct kabels besteld via Amazon, en deze laten opsturen naar een rv dealer (Camping World) in Richmond. Dit was de enige die tijd had om de kabel te vervangen. Zij hadden 2 kabels op voorraad maar ik heb er 5 besteld via Amazon. Altijd handig om reserve te hebben. Nadat de kabel vervangen was nam ik de tweede kabel van hun over, dit omdat de kabels van Amazon nooit zijn aangekomen. Dus met 1 reserve kabel opzak weer terug naar de kust (Virginia Beach). Langs de kust rijden aan de oostzijde van de USA betekend dat je de zee zelden ziet. Dit omdat er bijna altijd gebouwen staan tussen de kust weg en de zee.

Daardoor valt weinig te beleven langs de oost kust richting New York. Het enige wat ik weer meegemaakt heb is dat er weer eens een ruit van de trailer is gesprong. Dit is gebeurd ergens op de brugtunnel van Virginia Beach naar het schier eiland. De brugtunnel is gewoon een brug over de ingang van de Chesapeake Bay gaat en die wordt onderbroken door een paar tunnels om de scheepvaart niet te storen. Onder andere de marine heeft hier de grootste haven aan de oostkust in Norfolk. En aan het begin van het schier eiland waren in de tweede wereld oorlog verdediging werken gebouwd, om Norfolk te beschermen. Dit is na de oorlog ontmanteld maar ze hebben een loop en een paar massieve projectielen achter gelaten, in wat nu een natuur gebied is.

Dus ik weer op zoek naar een bedrijf dat die ruit kan maken. En het was natuurlijk weer in een weekend. Dan zijn dit soort bedrijven dicht. Ik heb bij een glas bedrijf overnacht tot hij open ging, deze kon mij niet helpen, maar gaf aan dat er in Salisbury Maryland er een paar zaten die mij misschien wel konden helpen. Dus op naar Salisbury. Daar aangekomen bij een glas bedrijf gestopt en deze konden mij ook niet helpen maar gaven mij een adres van een bedrijf dat zelf autoglas snijd. Daar aangekomen hadden ze dit soort glas niet op voorraad, maar ze konden wel een ruit maken en plaatsten van plexiglas. En dit kon de volgende dag gedaan worden. Ik mocht op hun terrein overnachten en kreeg zelfs stroom.

I drove from Kitty Hawk north along the east coast. One day I noticed that a cable in my pull-out kitchen had almost worn out. I ordered cables directly through Amazon and had them sent to an RV dealer (Camping World) in Richmond. This was the only one that had time to replace the cable. They had 2 cables in stock but I ordered 5 through Amazon. Always useful to have a spare. After the cable was replaced, I took the second cable from them, because the cables from Amazon never arrived. So back to the coast (Virginia Beach) with 1 spare cable in your pocket. Driving along the coast on the eastern side of the USA means that you rarely see the sea. This is because there are almost always buildings between the coastal road and the sea.

As a result, there is little to do along the east coast towards New York. The only thing I experienced again was that a window broke off the trailer again. This happened somewhere on the bridge-tunnel from Virginia Beach to the Peninsula. The bridge-tunnel is simply a bridge that goes over the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and is interrupted by a few tunnels so as not to disrupt shipping. The navy, among other things, has the largest port on the east coast here in Norfolk. At the beginning of the peninsula, defense works were built during the Second World War to protect Norfolk. This was dismantled after the war, but they left behind a barrel and a few massive projectiles, in what is now a nature reserve.

So I'm looking again for a company that can make that window. And of course, it was on a weekend again. Then these types of companies are closed. I spent the night at a glass company until it opened, They couldn't help me but indicated that there were a few in Salisbury Maryland who might be able to help me. So on to Salisbury. When I got there, I stopped at a glass company and they couldn't help me either, but they gave me the address of a company that cuts car glass itself. When they got there, they did not have this type of glass in stock, but they were able to make and install a window from plexiglass. And this could be done the next day. I was allowed to spend the night on their property and even got electricity.

Na een regenachtige nacht vanochtend naar Kitty Hawk gereden. Kitty Hawk is de plek waar de gebroeders Wright hun eerste vlucht deden met een gemotoriseerd vliegtuig. Ze hadden een geleide rail van hout met een metalen strip er op. Deze was ongeveer 350m lang en kwam van een helling naar vlak terrein. Ze hebben nu stenen geplaatst, waar ze los kwamen en waar ze geland zijn. Nu ligt daar gras, maar in hun tijd was het allemaal los zand. Ook de helling waar ze vanaf kwamen. Ze zochten ook altijd vrijwilligers om het vliegtuig die heuvel op te duwen. De eeste dag vlogen ze 36.5m in 12 sec, de dag er op 53,3m ook in 12 sec., de derde dag 61m in 15 sec. en de vierde en laaste dag 260m in 59 seconden.

Drove to Kitty Hawk this morning after a rainy night. Kitty Hawk is where the Wright brothers made their first flight in a powered aircraft. They had a wooden guide rail with a metal strip on it. This one was about 1200 ft long and came from a slope to flat terrain. They have now placed stones where they came loose and where they landed, Now there is grass there, but in their time it was all loose sand. Also, the slope they came from. They were also always looking for volunteers to push the plane up that hill. The first day they flew 120ft in 12 sec, the next day at 175ft also in 12 sec. the third day 200ft in 15 sec., and the fourth and last day 852ft in 59 seconds..

De generator en de zonnepanelen (800watt + batterijen 600Amp) werken. Dus aan energie geen gebrek. Nu onderweg richting the Outer Banks: Kitty Hawk om precies te zijn. Ik rij de toeristische route tussen de moerassen, meren en zee-engtes door.

Mijn excuses voor dit late bericht. Dit komt door het lange wachten voor ik daadwerkelijk op pad kon gaan. Het wachten was op een creditkaart, accu's, zonnepanelen, en de apparatuur voor de de inbouw en de inbouw zelf. Tevens is in de tussentijd mijn generator kapot gegaan en kwam deze er ook nog bij. Gelukkig heb ik in de winter wat bijverdiend om dit allemaal te bekostigen, maar vanaf nu weer op pad.
